How It's Made

Each ceramic trivet/coaster goes through a double-high kiln-fire process.
The 1st bake allows the raw clay to cure and harden before individual tiles are hand-painted with lead-free glass compound natural paint.
The 2nd bake is done in a high-fire kiln with a glass compound protective glaze finish. This bake occurs in a high-fire gas powered kiln for several hours where temperatures reach 1800˚F. The intense heat creates a reaction where the glass compounds transform into a glossy protective glaze coat. Hand painted on all sides except the bottom.
Because tiles & coasters are individually hand-painted each piece will vary slightly from the next. These artisanal qualities impart authentic personality and wholly unique presence.

Artisan Story
Coasters Inspired by a Mexican Folk Art Hero | Frida.

The Mexican folk artist Frida Kahlo inspired the artwork on these coasters. This particular design was adapted from a famous photo of Frida by photographer Nickolas Muray in 1939. The original photo called "Frida on White Bench" was taken by Muray while he followed Frida throughout New York during one of her art exhibitions. Each coaster, trivet, and tile is handmade from dense and durable ceramic that is kiln fired with a protective glaze. Each trivet is fitted with cork padding on the bottom. Safe for high heat and kitchen use. Trivets are painted on all sides except the bottom. All of our ceramic trivets/coasters are handmade by true craftspeople. Designed and created at our fair trade artisan studios located in Guanajuato Mexico. Read more>>
