This terracotta sculpture is a figurative incarnation for art imitating life and death. The Catrina Vida N˚1 statue is an extremely rare and creative rendition of Catrina sculpting and Catrina artistry. More traditional Catrina sculptures usually feature colonial long dresses with large festive sombreros. This figure was sculpted by hand and painted with the intention to honor the modern festivities of Dia de los Muertos. From the coloring and style of her face & body paint to her extravagant floral head-dress, all customary attire for the celebration of life and death during Day of the Dead.
Her colors and accents are native to the vibrant and lush jungle territory of Michoacán Mexico, where this Catrina was created. This is an original catrina figure sculpted, cured, and painted by hand from the renowned and award winning artist Marcos Perez.
