Santo Carving St. Francis Sculpture

This sculpture of St. Francis is carved from a solid piece of Mesquite wood that displays the beauty and variation in the hues of the wood. The sculptor(unknown) managed to capture the subtle facial details in St. Francis that seem to exude a sense of emotion both of empathy and tranquility. The tenderness of the bird he is holding which gazes at the Franciscan with a recognition of appreciation, and the devoted companionship of the dog by his side poised in a manner of protection. These qualities were achieved without compromising the right amount of primitive elegance.

St. Francis, also known as San Francisco de Asis, is probably one of the best-known saints to have existed.  He crosses all religious lines and beliefs and came to be known as the protector of animals and ecology.

This beautiful sculpture was found tucked away in a corner amongst many other assorted items during our recent visit to Mexico. It only took a moment to decide that he had to come home with us.  He is truly a treasure!
