How It's Made
This planter was hand thrown and molded from raw clay fired in traditional kiln heated naturally by wood and brush. A common technique used by indigenous ceramicist of Mexico. This traditional process & attention to detail has allowed this vintage terracotta planter to retain its durability.
Pottery crafted in this manner are substantial, often thicker and heavier than mass produced terracotta vessels of similar size. The texture is more porous and the terracotta color is much more complex than pots found at large chain general stores.
Mother Nature is a highly skilled painter and finisher of old terracotta.
Decades of exposure to the elements, moisture and oxidization has transformed the terracotta's surface. Revealing an variegation of textures and earthen colors, shades of green from the natural moss that once grew over the terracotta. Dusty Umber & smokey taupe to shades of slate, with spots of ash white, & smokey beige. A horizon of natural color and texture varies around the entire surface and interior. Some areas may exhibit mild deterioration, these areas do not compromise the structure the density or resiliency of this one of a kind vessel. Rather they add to the vessel's personality & authenticity.
