Description
Extremely rare class of culturally influenced, sculptural terracotta pots! The Metate planters are available in 3 distinct sizes. Short/wide oval-shaped medium size is perfect for midsize flora to mature small plants. The tripedal/three footed solid terracotta planter features design aesthetics inspired by traditional Mexican kitchen tools like the metate or molcajete. The pot's deep belly floats 2"in/5cm above ground supported by the 3 sturdy, solid terracotta feet.
The entire exterior surface of each Metate pot features a heavy texture. This rough-hewn layer varies per pot adding dimension and authenticity. From a distance the scabrous surface is reminiscent of avocado skin, yet close-up it the texture is more similar to lava-rock. Each vessel encompasses weathered finish, natural beauty, and novel history that can not be replicated. More about the color tone, texture, and terracotta make-up below.

How It's Made
This planter was hand thrown and molded from raw clay fired in traditional kiln heated naturally by wood and brush. A common technique used by indigenous ceramicist of Mexico. This traditional process & attention to detail has allowed this vintage terracotta planter to retain its durability.
Pottery crafted in this manner are substantial, often thicker and heavier than mass produced terracotta vessels of similar size. The texture is more porous and the terracotta color is much more complex than pots found at large chain general stores.
Mother Nature is a highly skilled painter and finisher of old terracotta.
Decades of exposure to the elements, moisture and oxidization has transformed the terracotta's surface. Revealing an variegation of textures and earthen colors, shades of green from the natural moss that once grew over the terracotta. Dusty Umber & smokey taupe to shades of slate, with spots of ash white, & smokey beige. A horizon of natural color and texture varies around the entire surface and interior. Some areas may exhibit mild deterioration. These areas do not compromise the density or resiliency of terracotta. Rather they add to the vessel's authenticity.

Artisan Story
The Unparalleled Charisma of Vintage Terracotta Planters
True vintage terracotta must survive at least 30 years to achieve the vintage title. Anything else is simply nostalgia masquerading as Authenticity. Unlike other mediums from a vintage era: canvas art, furniture, clothing; it is far more difficult for terracotta vessels to survive this period intact. By this comparison there are simply less terracotta vessels in existence today; Hello Exclusivity! The traditional methods of crafting terracotta have changed little for centuries, reflecting deep history and culture. Each vintage pot features textures, colors, patterns created by mother nature, with time and the elements her respective tools for creativity. Hand-molded from all-natural and low fired clay, this vessel is singular much like a musical masterpiece, yet functional enough to house your favorite plants.
