How It's Made

An Environmentally Sustainable Fabrication Process Utilizing Only Terra Material.
This sculpture was hand molded and shaped from a specific compound of raw clay. The raw earthen compound is mixed with water until proper consistency. The clay is then cast into large molds. These molds help provide the shape of the sculpture. Ceramicist then remove the cal figure from the mold and finish the shaping and sculpting by hand. Once of proper shape and durability the raw earthen figures are loaded into a large kiln. Kilns are heated naturally by wood and brush. Large to mid-size terracotta pieces are heated and cured one piece at a time for 24 to 48hours; depending on the size of the figure, the temperature of the kiln which varies between 300˚F-600˚F, and other variables. This sustainable artisanal technique has been practiced by indigenous ceramicist of Mexico for several generations.

Artisan Story

Handmade terracotta sculptures of this type are very difficult to produce. The large size and complex anatomical shape make the necessary techniques of shaping/molding and curing/firing challenging. During production/fabrication periods our team of artisans will loose about 20% of total pieces from implosion of raw clay & fractures during kiln fire. We work directly with the ceramists and artisan painters to design the size, shape, and authentic finish of this terracotta Longhorn sculpture. A process that required almost 2 years of close collaboration technical design alterations, and team work.
